Not If But When

Not If But When

We all knew it was a matter of time. I caved. My plan to play nothing but Legion of Everblight until the America’s Team Championship in 2019 has failed. I did get 40 total games in of Legion, which is virtually a new record for me in terms of keeping with one faction. But I went back to Protectorate, at least for a couple of games. As the image above shows: I’ve got the streak of flame and faith to me.

I’m going to keep working on my Legion project and keep practicing with those models, but I just needed a bit of a break. A little vacation into the faithful was fun, and a good way to shake up some of the games for our Permanent Death League that is going on. After this post, it’ll be back to Legion games for a while yet. They’re still the thing I think I feel most comfortable with, and have the strongest drive to paint and play overall.

I messed around with a few casters at first (clockwise from left). Tried a Severius2 list into Larry’s Madrak1 infantry list. Didn’t go so well, as Madrak1 has some pretty solid answers to everything I was trying to leverage. Lost on scenario pretty handily. Second game was Feora3 vs Rob’s Kraye, which I won just by an oversight in positioning. He even checked the distances, but then left a chargeable-model too close to a zero-camp Kraye (behind a forest even). Feat, charge, flame step, and finished. Lucky too, as the hurt that Kraye list can put out is serious to be sure. Finally, I played a game with Testament versus Andy’s Vlad1. Went the way of many Testament games. Exemplars took out some heavies, his remaining stuff killed a whole bunch of them, Testament sets up the assassination with ample damage on Vlad1 to burn focus and it finished with a charging errant who kills him.

I kept riding (pun intended?) Feora3 for a couple more games after that first set. I’ve really liked her fire mechanism and ability for Daughters to be effective contesting pieces (I need to sort out better contesting pieces with my Legion forces). On the left, was Feora3 vs Steve’s Garryth list. She managed to kill a lot with fire, survive the assassination attempt from Garryth, and then finished him off herself. Steve had a line on a better kill of her with a throw, but he moved in a different direction so I got lucky–Garryth missed 2 of his attacks that would have hit if she were knocked down, which still were unlikely to have killed her but would have made it much closer. Finally, a game against Chris’ Naaresh Skorne beast brick with the Hydra. Was a fast game, as he rushed up the board and threw all his beasts directly into my face. Feora3 and a charging Flame Bringer both managed to have an angle on him, and he was running on empty to accept all the beasts’ Fury, which ended him quicker than he expected.

Well, a little palette cleanser into Protectorate never hurt anyone too much. Now to get back into the swing of Legion things. Next on my painting table is a Hellmouth, and then more pieces of my Kallus1 Primal Terrors list that I’m enjoying.

A Plan to Keep the Faith

A Plan to Keep the Faith

So following my first trip to the Warmachine ATC (America’s Team Championship), I resolved to play a single faction more consistently. Given what my interests are in the game, I evaluated the factions at my disposal and I’m leaning toward the Protectorate of Menoth. I want to focus for the year on a single faction, and right now I’m leaning this way. However, I reserve my right to change my mind. February 3rd is my deadline to have decided on the faction to focus upon for this year: my teammate Ryan has ensured that he will mock me mercilessly if I swap at all after that point.

To that end, my painting focus started on things that I can use with my Protectorate army that I was already working on. So here is Eilish Garrity, all done up in my Protectorate color scheme and ready to hit the table (and be painting progress for this update). I’m going to dive into some Protectorate troops next, but he was already in progress so I got him done and out of the way.

Eilish Garrity the Occultist in Protectorate of Menoth Color Scheme

I had been leaning toward Protectorate prior to the ATC anyhow, and had already gotten together and assembled an Exemplar Interdiction list that I wanted to run. I didn’t take them to the ATC simply because they were unpainted, so I’m relaxing that rule this year and allowing myself some unpainted play–just going to try and make sure I make progress between each gaming excursion.

Focus also means picking Warcasters and practicing them in repeated fashion. I looked first at the ADR casters selection that will run from January to July, but only one of them really appealed to me (Thyra). The others are not exactly in my interests to play. I love Durst, but I fear he’s got a fundamental flaw in his play style. Though I did laugh that all three “big armor” warcasters made the list… Made me think of a comparison:

2 Protectorate of Menoth Season 7 ADR

Also, after making that I have been listening pretty much non-stop to the Fat Boys, now realizing that now as an adult I really like their music.

With the decision to just skip ADR concerns, I started with a Warcaster that had some sort of question they could ask an opponent. I’ve never had one that posed the “can you handle this many weaponmasters?” question, and that’s what Protectorate does very well (prob only second to Cryx). So I decided on my first Warcaster experiment with in leading my forces: the Testament of Menoth.

Protectorate of Menoth Testament of Menoth

I’m not doing anything particularly special with him–there are a number of lists out there that combine him with Exemplars in interesting ways, leveraging his ability to return them and their ability to hit hard without buffs and get where they need to go on Feat turn.

Played a few games so far, and enjoyed them. Spacing is something I need to watch, as is my clock. I lost a few too many in my game against Retribution by being clumped up and suffering an AOE. And same with Kodiak clouds against Khador. I think these are things I’ll learn as I play them more on the table.

Testament vs Gaspy2

Not the best picture because of the sunlight streaming in, but took on Ryan’s Gaspy2 list. The clouds were difficult to deal with, but there were so many banes he couldn’t cover all of them so I still was able to leverage my attacks for a win.

Testament vs Helynna

Second game against Steve’s Helynna and Ret. They definitely tested my recursion on one turn, taking out a lot of models when they committed the turn after Feat (as I mostly hung back to wait out the Feat). The Helios is a pain to be sure, but I managed to finally fell it with enough charges.

Protectorate Testament vs Khador Vlad2

Next up I faced Justin’s Vlad2 list. This was a heck of a grind of a game, as working through his high defense solos and all that armor was a pain. I finally managed to get a point where I could get charges onto Vlad himself as my opponent worked to get ahead in points. It took Elias Gade, Rhoven’s Honor Guard Gius and Cassian, and Testament himself down to the last bought attack to finish him.

Protectorate Testament vs Sorscha1 Khador

Justin and I played a second game, and he swapped over to Sorscha1. Again, a grind of a game (I’m starting to see that’s a thing with Testament). He went for an assassination with Sorscha, and even though I was stationary from her Feat his damage rolls were just too poor to get through my stack of focus. Another win for Testament, and it taught me even more about running this list (which is more fiddly than it looks).

So four games in and four victories. Should I take that as an omen? I’m looking forward to getting a second and third list up-and-running, so I can have some options–and I may experiment just a bit with a Hordes option as well. About three weeks until I need to be sure. I can do this!

Calculations of a Year

Calculations of a Year

It’s the end of 2017, and I’m writing my final blog wrap-up for my personal Warmachine and Hordes gaming. I’m judging it as a successful year for me. Painted a whole ton of miniatures (561 total points). Won a qualifier for the Appalachian Cup, and got to second place in the Cup itself. Showed well enough in the GenCon masters to consider attending again. And played just about the same number of games as last year (120).

I’ve also learned that I have some specific faction interests, and that is focusing my painting. Trollbloods, Convergence of Cyriss, and potentially Protectorate of Menoth are the three that will be the one’s I’ll sustain for the long run. In particular, Convergence is calling my name right now.

It was a crazy fall semester for me, and that slowed my pace of gaming and painting somewhat. I didn’t hit my double-points for the year goal (730points), but I still did well beyond the 365 minimum I set myself. I also had to slow down my blogging, so this is just a final culminating one with some shots of the last bits of painting I’ve accomplished (and finally updated stats for my games).

Painting-wise I finished up a bunch of Convergence models and one Protectorate of Menoth Warcaster. At least for the start of 2018 I am going to focus on Convergence of Cyriss, as I’m enjoying playing them and managing to paint them effectively enough.

Convergence of Cyriss Transfinite Emergence Projector

Transfinite Emergence Projector. This is a great model, and I’m really pleased with how it turned out.

Convergence of Cyriss Modulator

Modulator. My second for the force. I sadly think that I’ve already changed my mind and only need one for my Orion army plans… but at some point when I finish a Prime Conflux it will be nice to have a pair of them.

Convergence of Cyriss Accretion Servitors

Accretion Servitors. Gotta repair those robots!

Convergence of Cyriss Elimination Servitors

Elimination Servitors. They’re handy for spot removal, and get to be shield guards in theme. Now to finish two more sets to run with Iron Mother (and paint her… heh).

Protectorate of Menoth Testament of Menoth

The lone non-Convergence for this stretch. I REALLY like how he turned out, as I love my theme for Protectorate. They’re just such a pain to paint, and are seeming to need more and more models to do right. Gotta get working on them.

The Even Longer One (is shorter)

The Even Longer One (is shorter)

As per my last post, early August was crazy. Well, late August, September and October were even crazier. In short: I had a tumor in my neck that had to be removed, I recovered from it (benign), I attended GenCon Masters, won an Appalachian Cup qualifier, and finished runner up for the Appalachian Cup 2017 tournament. Oh and painted not nearly as much as I wish, but still a fair amount. So this details that entire process in one big post. Hope to get back to regular updates following.

First up, painting. So there are four factions total represented here. A bit of a scattered approach. I mainly played Trollbloods through this period though, as I took them to GenCon and used them in the Appalachian Cup. The others represent the three projects that I’m thinking of focusing on going forward, as it’s time for the Trollbloods to take a break. Three months straight of that army means I’m needing a change.

1 Trollkin Krielstone Bearer and Stone Scribes Unit

For years I resisted running a Krielstone. I finally had to add one. It still isn’t in all my Trollbloods lists, but I have been exploring some lists where it fits and is important. So here it is…

2 Trollbloods Pyre Troll

Pyre Troll. Thinking toward Horgle2 he’s a handy beast.

3 Minions Splatter Boar

Splatter Boar to go with my Protectorate-themed Rorsch and Brine. Had a nonsense idea for him with Malekus that never really took off.

4 Cryx Reaper

It’s been a LOOOONG time since I played Cryx. My team for the ATC is trying to get me to run them, as I haven’t used that faction since Mark II. I got in two practice games with Scaverous and painted this Reaper up. Not exactly my strongest preference, but a thought. They sure did fare well in the WTC this year (nearly 70% win rate is a thing).

5 Khador Juggernaut

Decimator test model for Khador. I know they look similar to my Protectorate, as I’m using almost all the same tones minus the gold. I honestly like it better I think. The bone stripes on red please me.

6 Khador War Dog

War Dog. This is the model I’m most proud of in this set. Just really pleased with the look.

For GenCon and the Appalachian Cup, I’m going to skip game pics in the interest of space. Below is the finisher sheet for GenCon Masters. Not great, going 1-2, but still okay. My losses were to the the person who ended up winning the entire Masters event, John Carter with his Convergence of Cyriss, and to Michael Ireland’s Elara2 Retribution list with all the Halberdiers. Finishing right behind Jake Van Meter in a field this strong? Not so bad.

7 GenCon Warmachine Masters Heat A 2017

And for the Appalachian Cup, I’m just going to provide the link to the amazing website for the event. It details the qualifying rounds, standings, and the 2017 Championship. Getting runner up meant being in the Hall of Champions even! I was really proud of myself for doing well, and I was a single dice roll away from snatching victory in a hard-fought game against Rob’s Witch Coven in the final game. One boosted roll that was an 8 which needed to be a 9 or better from victory. Alas!

So I’m now back on the blogging wagon again, hoping to expand both here and restart writing for Bell of Lost Souls soon. More to follow!

The Long One

The Long One

So August happened. What a mess. I did get in a fair number of games, and painted a ton. But work and life stuffs happened. And continued to happen. So this is a LONG post detailing everything. It involves three factions, changes over what I think I’m bringing to GenCon, and a rapid amount of painting.

At first, I thought I would take my Convergence to GenCon 2017. But they’re just not quite doing it for me painting-wise. I completed a fair amount, but have too much yet to complete. Here’s photos of what I did manage to paint in the end of July and start of August though:

Convergence of Cyriss Aurora

I’ve liked Aurora as a model for a long time, and as an idea for the battlefield. I got to field her in one game (see below) and I was as nonplussed as everyone warned me I would be.

Convergence Assimilator and Attunement Servitors

I also managed to fit in a number of Warjacks and some support. Here’s an Assimilator and Attunement Servitors.

Convergence of Cyriss Cipher

It might be just that I hate the clunky big four-leg warjacks for this faction. This is my second Cipher, and I dunno. Just don’t care for their look at the end of the day.

1 Convergence Modulator

Yet the floating Jacks look really neat. I’m quite pleased with how this Modulator turned out.

With a fair amount of painting but far too much left, and a couple of practice games with them, I realized that I wanted to bring a different option to GenCon. Hence, some real rush on painting Protectorate of Menoth–the faction I think I’m most inclined to be excited about and play.

2 Anson Durst Protectorate of Menoth

First up, the Warcaster I know that I want to make the core of my lists. Anson Durst is just too cool a model, and I have an idea for how to run a list with him that I really like. I’m super-pleased with how he turned out as well. And that always helps. I think my Protectorate is my best-looking army—even tho I love my Trollbloods as well.

3 Thyra Protectorate of Menoth

The picture on Thyra turned out a bit darker than I hoped, but I’m pleased enough with her. Once she gets some units of Flame Bringers and Daughters of the Flame completed to join her, I’ll be really pleased.

4 Protectorate of Menoth Castigator

And for my Durst plan I needed another Castigator. So here he is. I really like these Warjacks with him, as they answer pretty much everything I’m concerned with in his list: help with volume of attacks, can reach pretty impressive defense and armor values. They don’t hit as hard as others in the faction, but I really think they work with him.

Now for the rapid-fire gaming recaps. I got in a bunch of games. One with Protectorate, a pair with Convergence, and then a whole heap of Trollbloods games as I continue to play in our local store’s Trollbloods-themed event.

5 Anson Durst vs Lylyth1

My first attempt with my Durst list turned out to be successful, against Dave C.’s Legion list with Lylyth1. I learned some key things about running it, and I will definitely swap a couple of pieces going forward. But I really like what it does as a list. I won on assassination after a long grind of a game.

5 Aurora vs Calandra

My first outing for Aurora ended up with a win vs Ryan’s Makeda1 list. I managed to live the Aurora “dream”–having an angel run into base to base with the enemy Warlock then charge and finish with Aurora. Even though it worked this time, it was extremely iffy at best. Not sure she does enough for the force right now to make it worth attempting.

5 Lucant vs Heretic

My other game with Convergence was against Kevin, fielding his Grymkin forces. I fielded Lucant and managed to beat the Heretic on scenario. Facing Grymkin is interesting–I managed to get a few games against his Heretic list with my Trolls as well.

6 Madrak2 vs Butcher3

Speaking of Trollbloods, let the Troll games parade begin. I faced Paul’s Butcher3 with my Madrak2 list. Apparently Madrak2 simply cannot beat any Khador Warcaster I face. Butcher did his usual–get to the point where I couldn’t avoid him and stay relevant in scenario, then axe to the face.

7 Madrak2 vs Siege

Followed that game with Madrak2 against Mike’s Cygnar Trenchers list led by Siege. This game went far better, as Feat turn saw every single Trencher but one die to a rampaging Trollkin Champion. Opened the door for the Earthborn, who shot in and finished things up after surviving a round of retaliation.

8 Jarl vs Kozlov

Next up, Jarl versus Paul’s Vlad1. Jarl did his best, but got a bit too close in a later turn and got a Khador heavy to the face for his trouble.

9 Grissel2 vs Kozlov

Paul and I then played again with me swapping to Grissel2. I managed to get really close to killing Vlad by targeting things around him. He ran and hid, and still I got sprays onto him thanks to Grissel2’s flexibility. But it was just too little at the end and he had a couple of boxes left… which meant Grissel2’s quick demise to a Kodiak.

11 Grissel2 vs Kozlov

Seems like a steady diet of Khador for my Trollbloods lately. As my next game was against Zach’s Kozlov-led force. It was a good game back-and-forth, but Janissa Stonetide definitely won it for me. By making five Tough rolls in a row. Being steady, that meant she kept on surviving. That left him unable to clear the way and made Kozlov easy prey for my Mauler.

12 Jarl vs Heretic

The prior-mentioned Grymkin vs Trolls clashes. Played a Jarl theme list with lots of shooty Warbeasts into Kevin’s Heretic. The first game was a pretty handy win by assassination for me. If a Bomber gets a line on a Warlock with no transfers, even high defense won’t save you. It took the Swamp Troll rolling high to finish him off, but it worked.

13 Jarl vs Heretic Again

We decided to play again, just swapping the side of the table. This was a much more even match. He needed to take out Jarl to prevent the inevitable crash of heavies into him, and managed to miss a CRA from some flanking Hollowmen to allow Jarl to spin around and face the rest and survive the onslaught. Two great games against a good opponent, and a good chance to practice against Grymkin.

15 Borka 1 vs Nemo1

Finally, I got in three games as my Pacific Rim tournament ended up having an odd number of players for the event. I made 14, so I played as the Bye round opponent. That meant first facing off against Gary’s Nemo1 list. The combination of Bulldoze and 4″ reach on the Sea King is definitely something to respect, as Nemo wasn’t ready for just how far it could get with Borka1’s Feat turn.

16 Borka1 vs Lylyth1

Second Bye round offering was against Andy’s Lylyth1 list. This was a good game too, but trampling and then Mosh Pit for the auto-knockdown did the job to finish off his Warlock. Was a really fun battle as momentum kept swinging back and forth.

17 Borka1 vs Helynna

The final Bye round of the event I got to play against Steve’s Retribution of Scyrah list led by Magister Helynna. The bright spot for her was that his force got to the point where they had nearly, but not quite, finished off the marauding Sea King. Only Helynna remained, and so she charged in and got the kill herself. Sadly, Rök was close by with enough whelps that he could eat 3 free strikes and still get to her and finish her off.

Phew! What a set of games. All great matches with great opponents, so that was fun. Now to get a few more Protectorate things in shape before GenCon (or just relax and bring my Trollbloods… one of the two).

Tristan and Tournament

Tristan and Tournament

So I started this week by reading the great new novel set in the Iron Kingdoms: Godless, by Orrin Grey. It tells the story of Sovereign Tristan Durant (Durant2), and it’s a great piece of fiction that focuses on the Protectorate. I got so wrapped up in the story that I thought: I’ve got to paint this model. I had picked him up a long time ago (yay for friends who went to GenCon 2016), so it was good to paint him up to get him onto the table.

1 Sovereign Tristan Durant2

Sovereign Tristan Durant. I’m pleased with the look of him, as I am with all of my Protectorate. He’s an intriguing Warcaster, so I was pumped to get him onto the field of battle.

2 Eyriss1

I also finished up Eyriss1 this week, as I needed her for my Kreoss1 that I’m working on. His Feat enables assassinations. If Eyriss1 can then get a shot on the knocked-down Warcaster or Warlock, then it’s surely game over.

First up, I got in a couple of games with Sovereign Tristan Durant to see if I wanted to run him in the upcoming Steamroller tournament.

3 Sovereign Tristan Durant2 Protectorate of Menoth vs Cryx Asphyxious3 Gaspy3

His first outing as a painted Warcaster was against Ryan’s Cryx and Asphyxious3. In the battle of Warjacks, the fight goes to the squad that can gain souls/focus for Focus spent by models. Tristan got a little too close to Gaspy3, and paid for it with a nasty melee loss. It was certainly a fun game, as Ryan is a great opponent, but Tristan hit the dirt hard.

4 Sovereign Tristan Durant2 Protectorate of Menoth vs Mercenaries Fiona

My second test of Tristan Durant2 was against Savage’s Mercenaries led by Fiona the Black. Again, I am blessed to be in a fun meta with such great players. This was a great slug-fest. He finally managed to finish off Tristan with a few shots and a spell from his Warcaster. Was super-fun and I learned a lot about my list. Durant2 can be defensive if he’s camping enough, but he’s still vulnerable in ways as his survivability tends to come from what surrounds him.

These games convinced me that I was nowhere near ready for a tournament with Durant2. I like what he does, but finding a way to not be punished due to the slow speed seems critical. So for the tournament, I took my Kreoss1 list (now with the finished Eyriss1). I planned to play it for most match-ups, except those where I felt like there was some manner of assassination vector. I decided to pair him with Feora2. I like her abilities somewhat, and with the right support she can be definitely defensive. She at least seemed like a good look into infantry lists or lists that would be safe from Kreoss1’s knockdown shenanigans.

So what did I face in all three games? Two lists that were safe from knockdown shenanigans and one that was infantry-heavy. I ended up dropping Feora2 all three games. Which was hardly my plan nor my preferred option. Still, she worked okay in a few matches. I’ll discuss each below in slightly more depth.

5 Protectorate of Menoth Feora2 vs Legion of Everblight Kryssa

First game I was paired against Charles’ Kryssa list. I had to drop Feora2 because I knew he would be taking this option full of battle engines and serpentine models (maybe four models can be knocked down in the whole force?). I bumbled more than a few things in the game and he very effectively picked apart my force. I scared him with a Flame Step assassination attempt, but Feora2 didn’t have the focus nor the dice to finish his Warlock off, and I was crushed in return.

6 Protectorate of Menoth Feora2 vs Mercenaries Magnus2

Second game I laughed because I got paired against Savage. His first question: “did you bring Durant2?” Nope! With two lists that carried more muscle than Kreoss1’s list and ways to avoid knockdown in both, it had to be Feora2 again. This one went much the same as the last one, if not even worse. I was jammed into my initial spot and coping with the fast loss of my stuff. All I could do was light most of his force on fire and then watch him take out my models. With pretty much only Feora2 left, I had to use a desperation play–Flame Step and then try to spell Magnus2 to death. Luckily he had left Magnus2 without Focus, spending it to help take out my collossal with Calamity. I managed to hit with the spells and flamethrower, and that spelled the end of Magnus2.

7 Protectorate of Menoth Feora2 vs Cryx Skarre1

Third game was against Bill’s Cryx army. It was the new Ghost Fleet theme list with Skarre1 as the Warcaster. Because of the numbers and the incorporeal volume, I figured that the Judicator getting magic weapon from the Armory objective would have to be my play. Turned out that I had all the wrong tools except for Feora2. He did a great job dismantling my army. But Feora2 is just hard to kill–and she managed to set up in a spot of danger that still had a threat on Skarre1.

8 Feora2 vs Skarre1

Bill brought his whole force against Feora2, and totally should have killed her. His dice went completely sour on him, which is saying something under Skarre’s dark guidance. Feora2 managed to survive two warjacks and about six ghost pirates. Then it was a simple flame step, charge, and kill Skarre1 in melee.

I ended 2-1 for the Tournament, which I was very pleased about. That record left me in the top half of finishers, which seemed great to me given that I was stuck playing Feora2 in all three matches. All-in-all a good event and a good learning experience with my Protectorate.

Harbinger of Menoth

Harbinger of Menoth

Ah, the complicated existence of someone who cannot settle in and paint just one type of model over and over. Just as I’m getting started with Convergence of Cyriss, I start to feel like I want to paint something else. Of course, that means my plan to play only one Warmachine faction and one Hordes faction in 2017 has been long-since lost (this week’s games makes 3 different Warmachine factions and two Hordes).

I figured that if I wanted a change in painting I’d better do something worth my time. So I finally painted up a model that’s been intimidating me for a while: The Harbinger of Menoth. I assembled her last September or October, and got some initial colors on to her model before I stopped. It was time to get going and get her completed. That led to even more model completion from amid some of the Protectorate stuff I have acquired.

1 Harbinger of Menoth Protectorate of Menoth Harby

I’m pretty pleased with how the model turned out. I honestly like the scheme for the penitents who are towing her along maybe more than Harbinger–I definitely need to complete my Choir and add some Zealots and the Covenant to my painting queue. That said, I also like how Harbinger turned out. The red armor is something that I’m really getting comfortable with, and I think it works well on the tabletop.

Rhupert Carvolo Mercenaries Protectorate of Menoth

I also painted up a Mercenary model: Rhupert Carvolo, the Piper of Ord. As I will never, ever play Cygnar, he really is only for my Protectorate force. So I made sure that some elements of his clothes and armor matched with the look of my Protectorate force. But I still wanted him to be a bit different, so I made the odd orange color that I use for occasional sashes on Protectorate models the dominant color on him. It also gave me a chance to explore some rudimentary plaid patterns on the bag pipes.

On the gaming side of things, well… if I’ve got new models painted I want to play them. So out came my Protectorate for a few games–all using Harbinger as my Warcaster.

2 Protectorate of Menoth Harbinger vs Skorne Makeda1

First up, a match against Ryan’s classic-scheme Skorne, led by Makeda1. This game would have ended in a win for me, but it was his first time fielding Molik Karn and he messed up a bit of the order of activation in going for the long-distance kill run. I was happy to let Ryan sort it out, and Molik did indeed finish off the Harbinger. Was a fun game, and taught me that I need more bodies in the force. Even if I’m planning on only using Martyrdom on a few, I need to have that stand-off space in the army.

3 Protectorate of Menoth Harbinger vs Cryx Deneghra1

Second game I played against Larry’s Cryx, led by Deneghra1. The bulk of the force was two units of Satyxis Raiders and a unit of Satyxis Witches. It was a fun game, it was a curious puzzle for how engagement would go for both of us. I ended up losing thanks in large part to feedback damage from the Raiders’ whips. I definitely need to be ready for that in future games, and have more of an answer for infantry than I did. Of course, I also forgot to set my unit of Flamebringers on the table, and that really hurt my ability to be anti-infantry. Hopefully I can get a rematch in sometime against this force, as I think I’d like to see how I can go about the puzzle of stopping all those high-defense models a second time.

4 Protectorate of Menoth Harbinger vs Retribution of Scyrah Kaelyssa

My third game was against Steve’s Retribution, led by Kaelyssa. This was an odd battle–his warjacks were definitely ahead in attrition, but they were all clusters on one end of the battlefield–while the critical action was taking place elsewhere. Eventually the Flamebringers closed their way in on Kaelyssa and managed to kill her in a round of swirling melee.

1 Protectorate of Menoth Harbinger vs Retribution of Scyrah

Followed those games with a game against Dan’s Retribution of Scyrah. Was glad to see him back into the hobby after a break, but less glad to see the one Mage Hunter Assassin that managed to slip past my back line. I presumed it would go for support staff, as I had 15 hit points and only 2 damage on Harbinger. But he went for her instead, cranked the damage roll, and killed her in a single hit. Bad risk-taking on my part to be sure. Still a very fun game, as Harbinger’s feat and Protectorate shenanigans posed a tough puzzle for his infantry-heavy force.

2 Protectorate of Menoth Feora2 vs Khador Kozlov

Next took my Protectorate against a newer player in our meta–yet another Andy. He’s working on a Cygnar force, but also had some Khador. He took Kozlov, and as Harbinger is kind of wonky for newer players to face, I took Feora2. While the first-starting Redeemer did amazing work, and she had a silly amount of focus on her feat turn, she couldn’t pull off a personal assassination. Kozlov’s defense gets powerfully high with any sort of buff to increase it, and my dice went cold in the game. Feora2 suffered a Juggernaut to the back as a result of the failed assassination run, and that was that.

2016: Faith and Fury

2016: Faith and Fury

This is it, the final update of 2016. I got behind in updates due to the madness of the holiday season, so pardon the fact that this one is a LONG one.

The big highlights: I painted 727 total points (converted to Mark III costs) in 2016, and played 122 games fielding four different factions (Trollbloods, Protectorate of Menoth, Skorne, and Cryx).  I finished up with a 60% win rate overall, which I’ll take as pretty good for the sheer number of Warcasters and Warlocks I plunked onto the table during the year (27). I played the following Warcasters and Warlocks in at least one game this year: Feora2, Amon Ad-Raza, Kreoss1, High Reclaimer, Malekus, Durant2, Goreshade3, Asphyxious1, Scaverous, Skarre2, Deneghra1, Borka1, Grissel1, Doomshaper2, Hunters Grim, Jarl, Madrak2, Ragnor, Makeda1, Xekaar, Hexeris2, Morghoul2, Hexeris1, Naaresh, Morghoul1, Mordikaar, and Xerxis2.

My goals for 2017 are fourfold: Settle on a caster pairing and really play a lot of them, focus on a single Hordes and single Warmachine force, play in more “away” tournaments to get more exposure to players outside of our local meta, and paint at least 365 points again for the year.

On the painting side, here are the models that I completed to finish off 2016:

1-protectorate-of-menoth-scourge-of-heresy-alternate-color-scheme

The Scourge of Heresy prepares to cleanse the unfaithful.

2-protectorate-of-menoth-vigilant-alternate-color-scheme

Not a great photo, but the Vigilant stands ready to defend my warcasters.

3-trollbloods-hunters-grim

The Hunters Grim, which were a super-fun unit to paint up. I really love Krump in his little bowler hat and stogie.

4-trollbloods-dire-troll-bomber

Dire Troll Bomber stands ready to blow up some foes.

5-retribution-of-scyrah-griffon

And my final addition of 2016, a hint of my 2017 project: a Retribution of Scyrah Griffon.

I got a heap of games in to finish out the year as well. Some brief photos from each:

img_5183

Mortenebra could not handle the charge of the Allegiants of the Order of the Fist under Durant2. They gummed up the works long enough that I could get her into the range of the Book, and once she couldn’t cast spells she was done. More of a grind than an assassination, but it ended with her dying. I also got in a game with Malekus, who lost to Deneghra3 (but I failed to get a photo of them).

img_5184

Kreoss1 faced off against Fyanna2. It’s a rough match up for Fyanna overall I think, as his feat hurts her. After the knockdown, it only took an Eyriss1 shot and a single Vanquisher shot to finish her off.

img_5191

Did I mention that my meta is chock-full of Cryx players? Because it is. These are Terry’s amazing Bloodgorgers opposing my Malekus force. I managed to carve my way to Gaspy1 and finish him off.

img_5222

My newly painted Vigilant hits the field… and immediately loses me the game. Forgot the Banshee shot, having a medium as part of my bunker (rather than just heavies) turned the Vigilant into a slammed knockdown on Kreoss1. And Kreoss did not like the taste of his own medicine as he was promptly shot to pieces.

img_5262

With a sour Protectorate taste in my mouth from my blunder, I decided to play some Trollbloods for a bit. It also helped that I finally painted up the Hunters Grim and really wanted to give them some table-time. This is list absolutely not the list I want to field with them, but it was good to give a go with. I’m still finding Dire Troll Blitzers to be somewhat bland (the change of their animus is the worst part… as I loved the hijinks that I could do with their Mark II animus). My force took on Absylonia2, and I managed to triumph after a long grind of a fight. Abby2 came up just a bit short on killing Grim2 personally, which let me finish her off in return.

img_5269

Next I took the Hunters Grim into Deneghra1. Overall I think I played okay in this game when it came to attrition but ended up losing Grim2 when my center couldn’t quite hold to protect him.

img_5338

The Denny1 game had been against my buddy Ryan in prep for a Tournament we were headed to. Sadly, nasty ice and snow managed to keep us from heading down into the hills of West Virginia, so the four of us who were going to carpool played the “Bummer Bowl” instead at Ryan’s place (as so very much went wrong that morning it got to be absurd). I got paired against Ryan’s other half of his pairing: Aspyhxious3. It proved to be a very rough game, but the Hunters Grim managed to hold on for the win. Grim2 got a Blood Lure shot onto Gaspy3 and put up Rage on the Mauler, and I cleared the path with the remaining Blitzer. Despite being way behind in attrition, a single Dire Troll Mauler can get the job done when he can play with all five Fury.

img_5357

Another day, another Hunters Grim day. I faced off against Skorne this time, and my first chance to play Zaadesh2. The good news was that Grim2 had many of the tools to help against Zaadesh2. The bad news was that it took too long to get them leveraged in the right places. I lost by points on two opponent-turn dominates as I just couldn’t contest the left zone in the picture.

img_5385

Finished 2016 with a game against my buddy Michael’s Trollbloods and Horgle2. I fielded Ragnor, as Michael is just starting out–so seeing his other caster is almost like getting reps himself. Horgle2 puts on a heck of a nasty show. We played the scenario “The Pit”, and my early scores on my friendly flag left me able to steal a dominate of the zone in the middle of the game to win. I’m definitely nervous about the next time I face off against Horgle2’s flaming fury!

All in all, a heck of a 2016 year of gaming. I painted a ton of models, got in heaps of games with lots of casters while maintaining a solid win rate, won a best-painted award for my Trollbloods force at a Steamroller, and ran two amazing (I thought) home campaigns for a dozen players in our local meta each time. I’ll take it! Here’s hoping to make 2017 even better!

Homebrew Campaign

Homebrew Campaign

My main gaming lately has been the homebrew campaign that I’m running at Drawbridge Games here in Pittsburgh, PA, which has taken on a life of its own. I’ve been fiddling with all sorts of factions as part of it, working with whichever sides need more assistance in getting onto the map. Thus, my painting over the last few weeks includes some for each of my armies. After that, I’ll talk about the games I’ve gotten in lately.

dire-troll-mauler-alternate-paint-scheme-green-gems

Dire Troll Mauler. Yeah, this guy is an absolute monster in Mark III. Had to add one to my force, and I really like how he turned out.

1-hexeris1-lord-tyrant-hexeris-skorne

Lord Tyrant Hexeris. Really pleased with the model, even if his rules leave something to be desired.

protectorate-of-menoth-alternate-color-scheme-flameguard-cleansers

Finally, I added a minimum unit of Flameguard Cleansers (forgot to take a pic on the gaming table, so one on the shelf will have to do). For some reason infantry take me soooooo long to paint.

On the gaming side, I got in a heap of games recently against a variety of different players and factions. I’ll dive right in:

1-skorne-morghoul1-vs-harkovich

Since my last update, I started with some Skorne. Having finished Hexeris1, I had the idea of a pairing with him to be anti-infantry and Morghoul1 as an armor-cracking/counter-punch list against heavy spam. My first game was against Kommander Harkevich and a whole heap of Khador warjacks, so Morghoul1 it was. His feat really helps Skorne heavies survive the initial attack, and then answer back. I got to the point where too much was able to get in on Harkevich (two void spirits and an Aradus), and managed the assassination.

2-skorne-hexeris1-vs-asphyxious1

My other game was against Asphyxious1, and there were enough troops that I took Hexy1 for a spin. He was… less than impressive. I’m not sure which types of troops are best for him and his feat. Satyxis Raiders proved to have too high a DEF value to hit each other in melee, making my feat turn quite lackluster. I got caught having to catch up, which meant an over-extended Hexy1 and an assassination against me.

doomshaper2-doomy2-trollbloods-vs-sturm-and-drang-minions

Onward to some Trollbloods. I swapped to them mainly to balance out the sides in the campaign we’re up to, and started out with a Doomy2 loss to Andy’s Sturm and Drang. I played a lot of Doomy2 at the end of Mark II, so he was easy to plop on the table for a game to give it a go. My wall of heavies got close to sealing the deal, but I ended up losing after not quite getting an assassination. There was no way I was going to stay in the game when it came to scenario, so I had to make my move. My list needed a few more troops to really make it work.

borka1-trollbloods-vs-deneghra1-denny1-cryx

I followed that game with a match using Borka, against Scott’s Deneghra1 and Cryx force. He’s a newer player who has gotten good ahead of the curve, but the classic “understood that Borka is hard to assassinate but didn’t realize just how hard” problem manifested itself, and Mulg was able to get into Denny and finish her off in the turn after she went for it against him. Borka may be my favorite of the Trollbloods casters, as I simply love his dare: “go ahead and try, I’m right out front”.

jarl-skuld-trollbloods-vs-grayle-circle-orboros

Had an old friend, Charles, who used to play Warmachine and Hordes reach out and say that he was returning to the game and wanted to get a match in–so I jumped at the chance. Faced off against his Grayle list with my Jarl force. Mauler smash-and-grab was the name of the game, managing to cripple his Satyr and knock down Grayle with the throw. Thanks to Fury issues, and some lucky misses, the Mauler survived the retribution. Snacking down a few whelps, he then rocked into Grayle and finished him off. Was a great game, and Charles’ stuff is beautifully painted so always a joy to face.

protectorate-of-menoth-amon-ad-raza-versus-cryx-deneghra3

I’ve been bugging my buddy Ryan to finish up his Deneghra3 model ever since it took flight when he was bringing it on a windy day last year (the wind legit lifted the model off the top of his case and crashed it to the street, breaking it). He finally finished her up, so we nabbed a couple of matches as I was keen to face her. The first game I took my Protectorate and Amon Ad-Raza. Scenario was the Pit, so it was somewhat of a dead letter due to positioning. I almost got her assassinated, but came up just short. Having to trample to get there rather than charge hurts, and Amon’s feat still doesn’t fill up warjacks particularly well. Ryan managed to get a functional warjack onto Amon thanks to Ghost Walk, and that was a game.

protectorate-of-menoth-feora-2-versus-cryx-deneghra3

The second game I fielded Feora2, as I wanted to have my painted Flameguard Cleansers on the table. I managed a win over Deneghra3 this time, in large part because lighting my own jack wall on fire with Cleansers then swapping it over to key enemy models is just awesome. The kill came down to the continuous fire. Always my favorite type of assassination… wait, no it’s AWFUL to win that way. Shouldn’t go in if I need to get lucky to finish the job. Great game as always with Ryan, and it was fun to see Denny3 hit the table.

Scream-Roller and Open Warfare

Scream-Roller and Open Warfare

Another blog post for another few weeks of gaming madness. This time, it’s a Halloween event, some painting for one faction, and even a few games played with my other two factions.

First up, I ran the first of what I hope becomes a regular fall thing: a Scream-Roller tournament at Legions Games. You can see the close up of all the Jack-O’-Lantern objective markers I painted up for the event above. I also made key trophies for the winners and arranged for some “scary” door prizes (a Wraith Engine and some “Beware of Nerfs” Bane Warriors). You can read more about this event on Bell of Lost Souls, and the prizes and winners are below.

2-screamroller-prizes

The Prize Collection. Players got to keep their pumpkin objective markers if they wanted.

3-screamroller-winners

Front Row (L-R): Nicholas Caruso (3rd Place, Legion – Lylyth3/Abby2), Paladin Larry (1st Place, Cryx – Coven/Scaverous), Andy Thompson (2nd Place, Khador – Strakhov/Harkevich). Back Row (L-R) Door Prize Winners: Mike M. and Justin Shannon.

I made a bit of progress on the painting side, in addition to painting all of those Pumpkins (which took a fair amount of my painting time this month).

1-protectorate-of-menoth-wrack-vassal-of-menoth

I painted up a second Wrack and a Vassal of Menoth, ready to help Amon Ad-Raza scourge all non-believers.

On the gaming side, we’re starting a new narrative campaign at Drawbridge Games, which you can read all about here: Dragons at the Drawbridge. I wanted to get some experience with Madrak2 before the big January errata, so I began the campaign with my Trollbloods. However, seeing a player working to make Skorne effective made me miss my true love faction a lot, so I swapped to Skorne in the second week and will likely continue them forward for a while. The announcement that the designers at Privateer Press recognize that the faction isn’t working as intended is a really welcome one, which has gotten me excited about getting play in with them now to be ready for when changes come in January.

2-trollbloods-madrak2-vs-cryx-venethrax

My first game fielded Madrak2 into Ryan’s Cryx, facing off against Venethrax. Madrak2 did exactly as he does, and chewed through all the infantry (even though they were undead) in a single glorious Pacman-style turn. Then I simply jockeyed for scenario victory and counted on his quite-powerful survival rules to keep him alive.

3-trollbloods-jarl-skuld-vs-khador-karchev

My next game was against Colton’s Khador list with Karchev, which was definitely warjack heavy–so I swapped to Jarl Skuld for that game. It was a well-fought clash, again with my victory coming from scenario. I managed to survive the tide of warjacks by trading 2 for 1 (the Mauler’s buff really helps). It would have helped to have feated one turn earlier, but I still managed to get the win.

skorne-mordikaar-gunline-vs-cryx-deneghra

Week two my Skorne appeared to help carry victory to the empire. Though my first battle didn’t help. I’ve been fiddling with a Void Seer Mordikaar shooting list (counting on the spell that gives the entire battlegroup ghostly to free ranged warbeasts to slip back without free strikes and shoot again). It didnt’ fare particularly well in its first outing, however, and I lost to Ryan’s War Witch Deneghra. I was just going in on Denny with essence blast assassination when time ran out. It was a desperation move anyhow, as the list was absolutely unable to cope with the amount of infantry that he fielded. Back to the drawing board!

And to a different Warlock: Master Tormentor Morghoul. I played a very brutal game against Andy’s Legion of Everblight with Kallus at the helm. I manged to get a win with my force largely thanks to Morghoul’s buffs and feat: denial of transfers and the ability to throw a Bronzeback way further than one things due to Rush + Abuse managed to net me an assassination.

3-skorne-morghoul2-vs-mercenaries-gorten

My third Skorne game this week was Lord Assassin Morghoul2 against Enrico’s Rhulic Mercenaries with Gorten at the helm. I went for the cannonball special assassination as I was getting boxed out on scenario and it was my only hope. Gorten was on no Focus, so it would have totally succeeded. If the throw hadn’t deviated Morghoul2 directly back toward the throwing Bronzeback just enough that I was an inch short of being able to reach Gorten and Flashing Blade him to death. The best I could do was scamper to a safe-ish spot, which proved not so safe as Morghoul2 was assassinated in the following round.
